Domestic Energy Assessors Help Homeowners Show the Energy Efficiency of Their Homes When Selling

There is a new breed of professionals who you will get to know about now when you start out to sell your home. They are called Domestic Energy Assessors and are out now in England and Wales performing a brand new service.

The role of the Domestic Energy Assessor is to produce Energy Performance Certificates for inclusion in Home Information Packs. If this is complete news to you then just think of these as being certificates, like those you see on new fridges, which will provide A-G ratings on the energy efficiency of a home, plus advice on how to make further energy savings.

Energy Assessors will use their in-depth knowledge and practical understanding of the thermal performance of your home to judge on the thermal energy efficiency of properties.

This requirement has been introduced by the UK government working on the theory that these assessments of the the capability of all buildings about to be sold will encourage us all to be energy efficient. This will be good for the nation as it will be thoroughly green. It will the idea is, help avoid the need for the energy whether renewable or not.

This type of certificate is required whenever the building is constructed, sold or rented.

In the short term home owners directly, and home buyers indirectly, will need to pay for these Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and in order to possibly carry out work to improve poorly insulated properties, they will need to pay for general advice to clients on energy efficiency measures.

This is all very good in principle, but the UK government has chosen exactly the wrong time to do this. The credit crunch is hitting the house sales market hard, it is already very difficult to sell properties, and the value of most of them is falling.

The staff that produce Energy Performance Certificates are very experienced in construction technology, building condition surveying and domestic energy assessment and are Degree qualified professionals. They do not come cheap!

Now we do accept that most assessors will not simply stop at inspecting your property, they should also take the time to explain exactly what they are inspecting, how they are going to go about it and gladly answer any questions that you may have. But, most sellers are going to deeply object to being forced by the state to take on this additional burden of cost.

The energy assessor takes measurements to analyse the cost of heating, water and lighting for a house and makes recommendations to improve the energy performance of the house. To me it looks like you the government may think that an assessment is a quick hour in the property and thats it. I doubt they have fully considered the travel time to and from the houses to be assessed, time taken to assess, time to prepare and check the report, input the data, produce the certificate and then charge a fee which includes the professionals insurance, accountant fees, advertising and many other costs – the list goes on and on, after all they will have to make a living like everyone else.

Some people learn Energy Psychology from a book. Others learn it from a class or from a therapist or other practitioner. While the tapping itself is easy to learn and can be done on your own, sound judgment in knowing where to focus your attention is critical. If you decide to learn it from a therapist or a class, then as with any health care treatment, be sure you do some investigation and find a practitioner you can trust.

Home Energy Audit Helps Lower Your Energy Bill

The spiraling energy costs are putting immense financial strain on the consumers. It is high time that people should adopt energy efficient techniques to conserve the amount of energy used at home. This requires the help of home energy audit professionals.

Prior to their visit to the home, it is necessary for the occupant to keep the energy bills, ready. The bills help the auditor to understand the energy consumption requirements. It is beneficial to provide other information like electricity usage pattern of the house, thermostat selection during winter and summer season, type of appliances used and number of rooms and occupants in the home. This information helps the auditor to clearly understand the energy needs of the home.

The home energy audit helps the occupants know the true energy requirements and helps to conserve it by pinpointing the leakages in the home and the conditioning system. A careful analysis of ductwork, heating and cooling pipes, doors, windows, basement, corners and walls by specialized instruments like infrared camera, door blower and surface thermometer help to point out the exact the location of leakage, which can be later properly plugged to make the home, well insulated. A leakage in the home saps energy out of the air conditioning system of the home and makes the equipment work longer to achieve the desired temperature. The result is, more load on the system which ultimately causes increase in maintenance and fuel bill for the occupant.

A home energy audit makes it possible for the occupants to enjoy the comforts of the heating or cooling system of the house at a reduced cost. The money saved can be well spent on the other necessities of the daily life. You can then invest more in making yours an energy efficient home and thus drive a positive cycle where you continue to save money and used the money saved to start saving even more money. Therefore a home energy audit will not only pay for itself it will set you off on the road to savings that will keep adding up for the rest of your life. And it will reduce your carbon footprint as well.

Optimum nutrition and energy from Marine Phytoplankton

Marine Phytoplankton are single-celled plants that grow in the ocean. According to NASA scientists, Marine Phytoplankton are responsible for up to 90 percent of the planets oxygen, which is vital for maintaining life on both land and sea.

NASA scientists believe that around 3 1/2 billion years ago, the appearance of tiny plant-like organisms with the ability to convert sunlight,, water and minerals into protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and amino acids marked the beginning of life on planet Earth. Phytoplankton are the foundation for all other life forms and are the food utilized by the largest and longest living animals and fish. Blue whales, bowhead whales, baleen whales, gray whales, humpbacks, and right whales all eat plankton. These species live between 80 and 150 years old and maintain great strength and endurance throughout their lives.

Nearly all life in the ocean is dependent on plants. Only plants have the ability to manufacture food out of inorganic substances, such as energy from the sun. Thus all animals are dependent on plants, since animals cannot derive nutrition from inorganic substances. Being the original producers, plants form the first link in the food chain, a sequence of organisms in which each is food for the next member in the sequence.

In an article recently published in the Yale University Journal of Marine Research, the power stored chemically in the worlds phytoplankton equaled 63 billion kilowatts. Thus, marine phytoplankton is not only an incredible source of nutrition as the foundation of the food chain, but is a vitally important source of bio-energy as well. Benefits of Phytoplankton

The elements and electrolytes in plankton are almost tailor-made for the human body. It’s no coincidence that the composition of human plasma is quite similar in composition to seawater. Over reliance on land-based food sources often leads to deficiencies in micronutrients and trace elements. Our bodies need these elements to perform as nature intended.

Many people consuming Marine Phytoplankton report significantly increased levels of energy and vitality. The world renowned physicist, Dr. Fritz Popp, found that living things transmit small packets of light called photons. We are able to see the sparkling photon light produced by the phosphorescence in the ocean when the water is stirred at night. Since we are almost entire made up of water, we should only put into our bodies those foods and nutrients that have the highest quality, most positive frequency of energy.

Phytoplankton, the foundation of life in the ocean, the forerunner of life on land, and the sustainer of our atmosphere, has an extremely high energy frequency in addition to its nutritional content.

It is reassuring to know that a microscopic but highly powerful organism like marine phytoplankton contains the positive energy that we need to thrive, despite the hazards of environmental toxicity, stress and nutrient-depleted food. Our continued health may very well depend on our capacity to harness the nutritional and energy source from our oceans, and consuming properly harvested Marine Phytoplankton is an important step in the right direction.

Candle Low Energy Bulbs – A Frugal Solution to Elegant Home Lighting

Nothing really expresses elegance and class in a home quite like chandeliers, candelabras and window lights. However, a lot of people consider these types of lighting fixtures energy inefficient and costly. That’s no longer the case. The new candle low-energy bulbs available on the market today make using elegant lighting fixtures throughout your home affordable ways to save home energy.

The candle bulb is not really a new idea. However, until a few years ago, the typical, decorative candle light bulb was incandescent and used too much electricity. Poor lighting quality was also an issue with the older bulbs. But things have changed.

Today, these decorative saving energy lights are not only pleasing to the eye, but using them can substantially lower your average home energy costs. To accommodate a variety of home lighting fixtures, candle energy-saving bulbs are available as halogen-tungsten, LED and fluorescent compact bulbs.

Here are 10 Benefits of Candle Low-Energy Bulbs:
Remarkably, the new energy-saving candle lights use 80 percent less electricity, and yet these saving energy bulbs produce a brighter light than the old incandescent candle lightbulbs. This benefit alone makes these saving energy bulbs an appealing light bulb solution worth considering.

The typical candle energy-saving bulb is more durable and lasts ten to twelve times longer than its older counterpart. This results in major energy light savings in terms of money and time when it comes to replacing bulbs.

Another great feature of the modern candle low-energy bulbs is that they do not produce a lot of heat. This makes them cool to the touch and ideal for use with lighting fixtures that use lampshades and other decorative, yet flammable coverings.

An incandescent candle light bulb emits a yellow light similar to the light emitted by a real candle. Yellow light can cause eye strain. The new fluorescent candle energy-saving bulb produces a bright, white light minimizing unnecessary stress to the eye. These saving energy light bulbs not only help you save home energy, they also help save your sight.

Making the switch to candle low-energy bulbs is actually very easy because they fit in standard light sockets. This allows you to start saving home energy and money right away without having to change your existing light fixtures.

Real candles have always been considered an elegant lighting option for the home. Unfortunately, the ambient flicker of a real candle presents a very real fire hazard, particularly when used around children and pets. Once again, the low-energy candle bulb comes to the rescue as you can easily find ones that flicker.

Real candles not only pose a fire hazard, but they can also cost you more money over time than candle energy-saving light bulbs.

Typically, candle energy-saving bulbs cost more than incandescent candle bulbs. But don’t let this keep you from switching to saving energy bulbs because your energy light savings over time will offset the cost of purchasing the newer bulbs.

A big advantage of candle energy-saving bulbs is that they are available in a variety of colors, finishes and styles. This allows you greater creativity and flexibility in the design of the elegant saving energy house you’ve always wanted.

Low-energy dimmable candle bulbs, which are often used in chandeliers, wall sconces and candelabras, are also available in a variety of colors and styles including bulbs that imitate the flicker of real candles. Now that you know the many benefits of candle low-energy bulbs, you can introduce elegant lighting fixtures throughout your home that not only add class but help you save home energy and money.

California Governor Jerry Brown Wants to Increase Renewable Energy Workforce

Governor Jerry Brown is determined to create half a million jobs in the renewable energy industry. During his campaign, one of his promises was to increase the renewable energy workforce, and he has created a plan that outlines what he wants to do in order to achieve his goal. He was sworn into office this month, and now Californians are waiting to see if he lives up to his promises.

“My goal is that by 2020, California should produce 20,000 new megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, and also accelerate the development of energy storage capacity. California can do this by aggressively developing renewables at all levels: small, on-site residential and business systems; intermediate-sized energy systems close to existing consumer loads and transmission lines; and large scale wind, solar and geothermal energy systems. At the same time, California should take bold steps to increase energy efficiency,” commented Governor Brown.

“Below is my plan to get us there. It will produce a half a million new jobs in research, development, manufacturing, construction, installation, and maintenance over the next decade,” continued Governor Brown.

1. Build 12,000 MWs of Localized Electricity Generation

a) California should develop 12,000 megawatts of localized energy by 2020. Localized energy is on-site or small energy systems located close to where energy is consumed that can be constructed quickly (without new transmission lines) and typically without any environmental impact.
b) Solar systems of up to 2 megawatts should be installed on the roofs of warehouses, parking lot structures, schools, and other commercial buildings throughout the state.
c) Solar energy projects up to 20 megawatts in size should be built on public and private property throughout the state. For example, we should create the California Solar Highway by placing solar panels alongside our state highways.
d) The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) or Legislature should implement a system of carefully calibrated renewable power payments (commonly called feed in tariffs) for distributed generation projects up to 20 megawatts in size. Holding down overall rates must be part of the design.

Governor Brown’s plan is to install solar panels in warehouses, parking lot structures, schools, commercial buildings, and highways. Knowledge of proper solar panel installation procedures is important for workers to have, therefore solar photovoltaic (PV) training is required. The American Institute of Renewable Energy (AIRE) is a solar training school that offers solar sales force training, solar installation certification courses, and solar panel installation training. By being a part of Governor Brown’s plan, those looking for this type of work should really consider attending this remarkable institution.

The American Institute of Renewable Energy (AIRE) is located in southern California and offers the best instructors and hands-on experience in solar power training. If one is interested in attending a course, one should take advantage of the free bimonthly solar seminars AIRE offers. Receiving quality training in solar panel installation is the first step in accomplishing Governor Brown’s goals.

Saving Energy by Improving Home Exteriors

When the weather is warm we tend to spend time in our yards mowing the lawns, trimming the bushes, planting flowers. We all have a desire to want the outside of our houses look nice. Whereas this is often a worthy cause, are we putting as much diligence into making the outside of our homes cost efficient? We work hard to keep a roof over our heads thus why toss money away by permitting heat to escape?

The majority of the houses heat escapes in the course of drafts. Filling these drafts will save on the heating cost over time. Do a walkthrough around the exterior of you home to find what has to be improved. First you should examine all the areas where two different construction materials meet for example where the siding meets the chimney and where the foundation meets the exterior brick or siding. Examine all exterior corners as well. Youll need to fill any cracks or openings in the mortar, the foundation or the siding. Make sure to fill them with the suitable substance. If you are going to complete a job, do it right. And, it can last longer if its done the proper way with the correct material. You will also want to inspect where faucets or pipes extend from the exterior. Make certain there are not any holes around them as well. In your exterior inspection, dont miss the windows and doors. Make sure that theyre all properly caulked and that windows and doors seal tightly. Some people have air conditioners mounted directly into the wall rather than in a window throughout the summer months. While this might save on time of installing and un-installing the air conditioner each year, it is also a great way to let in drafts throughout the winter months. Make certain that the area round the air conditioner is properly sealed. If you dont have one by now, invest in a cover that may be placed over the unit in the winter. This can stop the unwanted cold air from getting in your home.

Also, make sure that your house is properly insulated. This will save you a large amount of money. In particular check the attic. Make certain that there is a steam barrier under the attic insulation. Water vapor will pass through the ceiling. With large amounts of moisture, the effectiveness of your insulation goes down and may cause structural damage. In order to prevent this, you should have a vapor barrier which may be tarpaper, Kraft paper attached to fiberglass batts, a plastic sheet or vapor barrier paint. Additionally make sure that any gaps round the pipes, ductwork or chimney is correctly sealed.

If youve got the funds, you might need to consider replacing recent doors or windows with new energy efficient ones. While this can be an improvement that will dip into your pocket, it will as well save you cash on heating. With the price of home heating, making sure that the exterior of your home is properly sealed is almost a necessity.

What Are The Practical sources Of Energy Part 1

What Are The Practical sources Of Energy? Part 1

The practical sources of energy include the fossil fuels, natural gas, petroleum (or oil), and coal. Fossil fuels are referred to as nonrenewable energy sources because, once used, they are gone. Scientists are exploring the practicality of other sources called renewable energy sources. These include sun, wind, geothermal, water, and biomass. The renewable energy resources are important in long range energy planning because they will not be depleted.

Natural Gas

Sometimes natural gas is confused with gasoline, the fuel in cars. They are not the same. Gasoline is a mixture of liquids, and natural gas is mainly methane and is piped into homes and office buildings where it is used as an energy source for heating, cooking washing, and drying. It is raw material to make other chemicals, and is the cleanest bumming fossil fuel. This means it contributes little environmental pollutants when bummed.

Petroleum or Oil

This is the black, thick liquid pumped from below the earth’s surface wherever you see an oil rig. To make it useful, it is refined. Refining separates the gasoline portion which is used in transportation. Products from the remaining portions include synthetic rubber, detergents, fertilizers, textiles, paints, and pharmaceuticals.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy refers to the energy deep within the earth. It shows itself in the fountains of boiling water and steam known as geysers. Geothermal energy was generated by the decay of natural radioactive materials within the earth. In addition it is the heat energy remaining within the earth from gravitational formation of the earth. This energy source is not popular in the United States, but Yellowstone has some geysers. Geothermal energy is used to heat some homes, greenhouses, and factories. The actual usable geothermal sites are few, but is considered a renewable energy source.

Coal

Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel. It is not a widely used energy source due to the cost of mining and its impurities, which cause pollution (acid rain). There are two ways to mine coal; underground mining and strip mining. Disadvantage to these methods is the environmental change caused in the process. New ways of using coal are being explored, such as liquefication, in which a product similar to oil is produced.

Solar

The sun is 93 million miles away and yet, this ball of hot gases is the primary source of all energy on earth. In the hi ugh temperature of the sun, small atoms of hydrogen are fused, that is, the centers of the two atoms are combined. Fusion releases far greater energy than splitting the atom (fission, see below). Without sunlight, fossil fuels could never have existed. The sun is the supplier of energy which runs the water cycle. The uneven heating of the earth produces wind energy. Solar energy can be used to cook food, heat water and generate electricity. It remains the cleanest energy source an it is renewable. It is the hope for the energy source of the future and scientists at NREL are actively working on ways for solar energy to supply more our energy needs!
